Regulation (EU) 2018/848 is the governing framework for EU organic production and the use of the EU organic logo. It replaced the earlier Regulation (EC) No [[https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A02007R0834-20220101|834/2007]] and its main implementing regulation (EC) No [[https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A02008R0889-20220101|889/2008]]. The 2018 Regulation came into full force on 1 January 2022 after a transition period. It explicitly includes seaweeds and microalgae within its scope, treating them as aquaculture products (Part III) while simultaneously acknowledging that they are plant-derived commodities for CN/nomenclature purposes — reflecting the genuine regulatory hybridity of algae discussed throughout these pages. Regulation (EU) 2018/848 is the governing framework for EU organic production and the use of the EU organic logo.  __Note 1__: It is important to know that organic is translated quite differently to different languages: it could be Organic, Ecologic or Biologic - this in itself is frequent source of confusion (e.g. where it is called Ecologic, it bears an implicit conotation of sustainable, which is only partially relevant to organic labelling).

It draws on outside experience to make sure that the EU rules on organics are effective and proportionate; it ensures the EU keeps up to date with any technical advances in the field.
