Where algal biomass is produced in a wastewater treatment context and the resulting biomass is classified as or mixed with sewage sludge, it would fall under this Directive's restrictions. In particular, the Directive limits the metals content of sludge applied to agricultural soils. The ongoing revision of this Directive is expected to introduce updated and stricter contaminant limits.

This is particularly relevant for algae grown on and retaining nutrients from agricultural wastewater or nutrient-rich effluent.
