HAB Harmful Algal Bloom Rapid proliferation of algae (often cyanobacteria or dinoflagellates) producing toxins or causing oxygen depletion; key risk factor for wild-harvested algae
IAS Invasive Alien Species Non-native species causing ecological or economic harm; subject to Regulation (EU) No 1143/2014
LC-PUFA Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Fatty acids with ≥20 carbon chain length and ≥2 double bonds, including DHA and EPA; major nutritional interest of marine algae
NGT New Genomic Technique Biotechnological methods enabling targeted modification of an organism's genome (e.g. CRISPR-Cas9); proposed EU Regulation distinguishes NGT 1 (equivalent to conventional breeding) and NGT 2
PAH Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Environmental contaminants formed by incomplete combustion; regulated in food under Regulation (EU) 2023/915
PCB Polychlorinated Biphenyl Persistent organic pollutants regulated in food and feed; dioxin-like PCBs subject to EFSA opinions and ML regulations
