About These Pages
This wiki is a structured, freely accessible reference guide to EU legislation relevant to the production and use of algae and algal products. It is maintained as a living document by a community of practitioners, researchers and legal experts working in the European algae sector, and is kept current as legislation is amended and new regulatory developments emerge.
The information compiled here draws on public and project deliverables from multiple EU-funded research and innovation projects, on scientific literature, on EFSA and Commission guidance documents, and on direct exchanges with experts across the sector — accumulated over more than a decade of regulatory engagement within EABA and related networks.
Authors and Contributors
These pages were initiated and are maintained under the EU-funded Horizon Europe project Locality, but the underlying work predates the project and is intended to continue after it ends.

Areas Where Contributions Are Most Welcome
1. Within the present scope (EU-level regulation in force)
- Missing chapters or missing relevant content in existing chapters.
- Corrections, clarifications, or important additions to existing explanations.
- Clearer or better explanations of any topic; graphic explanations are especially welcome.
2. National regulation
Contributions covering the specifics of regulation at the level of individual EU member states.
3. Non-EU legislation
Contributions on, and comparisons with, legislation relevant to these topics in non-EU jurisdictions.
4. Upcoming and prospective developments
Information and discussion on upcoming rules, proposals, strategies and initiatives.
Note: national, non-EU and prospective content will be visually distinguished from the core EU-level content; the convention for this is being developed.
The Algae Community in Europe
- EABA — European Algae Biomass Association is the principal networking body for the European algae sector, with more than 300 members from industry and academia. EABA has been actively involved in regulatory and standardisation activities, representing industry interests at EU level, and has been the primary forum within which much of the knowledge in these pages has been developed and debated.
- EU4Algae is a European Commission initiative (DG MARE) launched in 2022 to accelerate the development of a sustainable and innovative algae sector in Europe.
We are grateful to both organisations and to their members and participants for the knowledge shared over many years of events, working groups and informal exchanges.
